The Tony Awards 2016 just restored our faith in diversity at awards show. #OscarsSoWhite may have brought disappointment earlier this year — but 2016 Tony Awards just made history as the winners for four major categories — lead actor, lead actress, featured actor and featured actress — were all folks of colour!
Hamilton‘s Leslie Odom Jr., The Color Purple‘s Cynthia Erivo, Hamilton’s Daveed Diggs and Hamilton’s Renee Elise Goldsberry took home the big prizes last night.
Of course, Hamilton itself dominated the Tonys last night.
This awards show proved inclusivity is both possible and amazing.

If you’re wondering, the last time the Tonys even came close to having a diversity win like this was back in 1982. It was the year Dreamgirls took home lead actor, lead actress and featured actor categories. But it wasn’t until this year that actors of colour did a full sweep of significant musical performance categories.
See? Diversity and representation matter. And Tonys 2016 did it right.
We couldn’t be more delighted.
