Producer, actor and director Elizabeth Banks is stepping down from directing upcoming Pitch Perfect 3 due to motherhood responsibilities, Banks told a panel at the Producers Guild of America’s 8th annual conference on Saturday at Sony Pictures.
Though Banks will no longer be directing the third instalment of the Pitch Perfect franchise — she’ll still return as both a producer of the film and reprise her role as Gail, the aca-hilarious judge.
The production and release date for the much anticipated comedy about synchronized lady dancers who make music with their mouths — has been kind of a mess. Originally it was bumped up to July 2017 before it was pushed back to December 2017 last week, according to Variety.
But fear not — onscreen favourites Anna Kendrick, Brittany Snow and Rebel Wilson still have their close deals sealed and are set to return to the stage.
It’s a shame the film is losing Banks, one of the very few more notable female-producer-directors in the industry. Alas, with the release date pushed back, production schedules changing and delayed shooting — the former director listed her parental schedule as a reason for bowing out.
Aside from being a strong female influencer in Hollywood, Banks is also a mother of two children. She was committed to shooting during the summer, but when that changed — she had to make a tough decision.
“It was really important to me to direct the movie in the summer because if we pushed into fall it bumped up against my parental responsibilities, which made me feel uncomfortable,” said Banks.
According to Variety, her departure from her director role was amicable. After all, she still championed the threequel at the panel.
Pitch Perfect 3 will obviously have strong female leads, as the first two did. Her focus on female-driven content came up and she spoke up for female representation in film.
“I like female characters. I can’t in my soul develop female characters that are arm candy or incidental,” Banks said. Her passion for feminism in film became more evident when she spoke of her desire to control how female stories are told and her ambition to tell them beyond being someone’s girlfriend or wife.
Well, Banks. We do have some solid
We’re still aca-excited for Pitch Perfect 3! Here’s still hoping for some Bechloe to happen!
