Bisexuals often get a bad rep, even within the LGBT community, and Evan Rachel Wood has experienced it first hand.
“It was always talked about like a phase or something stupid, or something you were doing for attention. You know, bisexuality is worthy of eye rolls. And I didn’t realize how damaging that was until I tried to have healthy relationships as an adult and realized that there was still all this shame and conditioning and stigma around my sexuality that was really affecting the way I related to people,” the Westworld star told Rolling Stone.
Wood joins other celebrities who have faced public scrutiny for being openly bisexual including Amber Heard, Margaret Cho, Carrie Brownstein, and Michelle Rodriguez.
“I think I was taken advantage of because someone knew there was something about me that they could exploit,” Wood added.
The 29-year-old also candidly spoke about her former relationship with Marilyn Manson, her experience with sexual violence, and motherhood.
“Yes. I’ve been raped. By a significant other while we were together. And on a separate occasion, by the owner of a bar…I don’t believe we live in a time where people can stay silent any longer. Not given the state our world is in with its blatant bigotry and sexism.”
Wood’s character in Westworld, Dolores, also faces a lot of sexual violence but like the actor that plays her, she doesn’t stay silent in a world that is trying to control her.
“I think every great actor brings their life experiences,” showrunner Jonathan Nolan told the magazine. “And she had such a precise level of control of what she was doing. It was astonishing to us.”
