The Hadid sisters sure know how to stay in the headlines, but this time it’s not for landing a magazine cover. Bella Hadid posted a video of her sister, Gigi, appearing to squint her eyes and imitate Buddha (well, a cookie version of the religious figure).
Social media followers quickly attacked the 21-year-old model’s behaviour and the video was deleted.
“This is y’all woke palestine queen? Gigi out here mocking Asian people. i would say she’s cancelled but she never started,” a popular comment reads.
Others share the commenter’s sentiment and referenced other times she’s been accused of being culturally insensitive. Last year she wore dreadlocks on the Marc Jacobs runway and wore a blue Afro wig on the cover of Vogue Italia.
Her 20-year-old sister Bella has also been accused of racism. Last year old tweets resurfaced and we’ll let you judge for yourself, but it is worth mentioning she was probably 15 or 16 around the time they were published. It’s also worth mentioning most 15 and 16 year olds know not to say that word.
The Hadid sisters’ reactions add to the problematic situation. Instead of learning from their mistakes and apologizing they delete the evidence, ignore the backlash and continue with their controversial behaviour.
