In a blog styled piece for Huffington Post, Jennifer Aniston called out tabloids and celebrity media on their sexism and anti-feminist pressure on women to reproduce.
This rant follows pregnancy rumours that the former Friends star is done with. She’s sick of being harassed and stalked — and because she doesn’t do the social media thing, she opted to share her feelings on HuffPo. They let it happen — and, y’know what — we’re supporting it too.
“For the record, I am not pregnant. What I am is fed up. I’m fed up with the sport-like scrutiny and body shaming that occurs daily under the guise of “journalism,” the “First Amendment” and “celebrity news,” the actress writes.
Aniston goes on to address issues with societal’s beauty standards, body shaming and objectification. She’s mad about the messages that are put out there by the media and talks a bit more about how annoying her life is when she has to deal with folks asking about her fictional pregnancy.
The Horrible Bosses actress also touches on the right for women to opt out of motherhood.
“We are complete with or without a mate, with or without a child. We get to decide for ourselves what is beautiful when it comes to our bodies,” Aniston writes.
Of course, we sympathize with her and get that all of this sucks. One thing worth pointing out that wasn’t mentioned in her HuffPo piece was the fact that she has been on the other side: back in the 90’s she was a beauty ideal, represented glamorous women in their twenties and even had a hair trend.
It’s possible Aniston is also struggling with something slightly less relatable for other feminists — a bruised ego born from fame back in her earlier days. She’s dealing with ageism and other sexist issues as well. What goes up always comes down, right?
Either way, the struggle is real. We’re glad HuffPo provided the platform for her essay. Though a bit on the white feminism side of things, Aniston does call out sexism in the entertainment industry.
