Micah Fowler, who previously starred alongside Kate Winslet in Labor Day, has been cast in ABC’s new pilot Speechless. This time the young actor gets to work with Oscar-nominated actress Minnie Driver.
Speechless is a comedy about a family with a special-needs child named JJ who is nonverbal. Fowler, who has cerebral palsy, will play JJ in the pilot. Driver plays JJ’s mother and The Big Bang Theory’s John Ross Bowie will play his father.
Fowler has already made his acting debut, in a big way! He worked alongside Winslet, Josh Brolin, and Tobey Maguire in Labor Day – a film about a depressed single mom and her son who befriend an escaped convict.
The show is produced by Friends alum Scott Silveri and Fresh Off the Boat’s Jake Kasdan and Melvin Mar.
This is a great move on ABC’s part – often these roles are given to able-bodied actors. Aside from Michael J. Fox, we don’t see a lot of disabled actors on TV or in movies.
