The latest trailer for Jennifer Lawrence’s film Joy brings us feelings, a lil onscreen reunion, the Bee Gee’s classic song To Love Somebody and a strong leading female.
This upcoming biographical dramedy is about a struggling single mother of three, Joy Mangano (Lawrence), making a life for herself after skipping college to aid her parents through a divorce and inventing the ‘Miracle Mop’.
“It’s my fault,” Mangano’s father, played by Robert De Niro, says in the trailer, “I gave her the confidence to think that she was more than just an unemployed housewife.”
Following four generations of Mangano’s family, the movie centres on Joy — the adversity she faces, her ambition and how she works her way up to become the founder of a family empire.
With De Niro playing Lawrence’s father and Bradley Cooper as an executive at the Home Shopping Network in this David O. Russell drama, this film reunites all of them. Joy is the fourth collaboration for JLaw and Cooper, their third with Russell — the trio worked together in 2012 film Silver Linings Playbook with De Niro. In fact, De Niro even made a little cameo in 2013’s American Hustle.
In case you’re wondering, JLaw is also already generating Oscar buzz for this role. The best actress competition is going to be intense this year with 2015 being about increasing stronger roles for female leads — from Carrie Mulligan to Cate Blanchett to Lawrence. Oh, Joy.
The movie hits theatres on Christmas day.
